Indian lenders experienced accelerated loan growth in the December quarter following a sharp slowdown in mid-2025 due to stricter regulations, with overall systemic credit growth improving to 11.4% year-on-year from a low of 9% in May 2025, driven by festive spending and government consumption tax cuts as evidenced by HDFC Bank’s 11.9% growth, Bank of Baroda’s 14.6% rise, and smaller banks CSB Bank and AU Small Finance Bank achieving 29% and 24% increases respectively, though deposit growth lagged behind.
HDFC Asset Management Company entered the private credit market by launching Structured Credit Fund-I targeting a ₹2500 crore corpus including green-shoe option to provide alternative debt financing to mid-market companies, with International Finance Corporation committing up to ₹220 crore as anchor investor alongside ₹1290 crore raised in first close and ₹380 crore already committed across three deals aiming for 14-17% mid-teen returns over 4-6 years.
The Reserve Bank of India stated that Indian states are likely to borrow a record-high sum of 5 trillion rupees ($55.45 billion) in the January to March quarter after raising 7.13 trillion rupees through bond sales in the first three quarters, which would constitute their highest ever quarterly borrowing and push annual borrowing to an all-time high amid weakened bond demand across segments poised to push up yields.
The government launched two measures with an allocation of ₹7,295 crore over six years (FY26-31) comprising interest subvention for export credit and collateral support to enhance trade finance access for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), particularly small and first-time exporters facing working-capital constraints amid global trade headwinds, as part of the ₹25,060 crore export-promotion mission approved by the Union Cabinet in November.
