Regional Saffron – On Maharashtra Politics
The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance secured a decisive victory in the recent Maharashtra civic polls, winning control of major municipal corporations including Mumbai’s BMC, Pune, Nashik, and Nagpur, with BJP emerging as the single largest party by capturing over 1,400 seats across 2,869 wards. This success marked the end of long-standing regional dominance by families like the Thackerays in Mumbai and Pawars in other cities, as BJP’s strong organisation, development focus, and Hindutva appeal outmanoeuvred local identity politics. Allies such as Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP suffered setbacks, highlighting BJP’s growing supremacy under Devendra Fadnavis. With control of rich urban bodies now in hand, the ruling alliance must prioritise solving pressing civic issues like poor infrastructure, water scarcity, waste management, and housing rather than resting on electoral gains. Regional opposition may attempt comebacks through language or cast

Fractured Yemen – On the Persian Gulf Region’s Geopolitical Fault Line
Yemen remains deeply divided among multiple factions, with Iran-backed Houthi rebels controlling the north including Sanaa, the Saudi-supported Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) holding southern areas like Aden, and UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) seeking independence in the south. Recent clashes saw STC seize oil-rich provinces in late 2025, prompting Saudi airstrikes and government counteroffensives that reclaimed key territories by early 2026, worsening the humanitarian crisis affecting 21 million people amid funding cuts and service disruptions. Saudi-UAE rivalries fuel proxy conflicts, while Houthis exploit chaos for regional leverage through Red Sea attacks. A unified political process remains elusive as external powers prioritise their interests over Yemen’s stability, prolonging suffering in the poorest Arab nation.

For Pest-Hit Farms, Science Is Surest Antidote
Mustard farmers in Rajasthan and Haryana battle Orobanche aegyptiaca, a root parasite weed competing for nutrients that hides until damage occurs, threatening India’s top edible oil crop. Weeds above ground allow hand removal, but root ones demand research for resistant varieties as labour shrinks and climate change brings new pests. Indian Agricultural Research Institute and Savannah Seeds created rice with mutated ALS gene tolerant to imazethapyr herbicide, killing weeds safely. Mahyco did similar for wheat; Corteva’s mustard hybrid handles imazapyr and imazapic. The Centre allows non-GM herbicide-tolerant and gene-edited crops, but should open to GM like Delhi University’s mustard with foreign genes for multiple herbicides to fight resistance. Large field trials can prove safety and boost food security.

40 Years Ago, January 20, 1986: Pakistan’s Doublespeak
On January 20, 1986, India and Pakistan could not agree on a single draft for a peace treaty, as Pakistan held back on issues like foreign military bases and settling disputes directly between the two nations. Pakistan offered a revised version saying neither country would let its land be used against the other but refused to promise no foreign bases ever. Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi said Chandigarh could transfer to Punjab on January 26 as per the Punjab accord, awaiting the Mathew Commission report on the Punjab-Haryana dispute. BJP leader and former MP Kanwar Lal Gupta died at 62 after a long illness and was cremated in Delhi. In South Yemen, Marxist groups accepted a Soviet plan to separate forces after ousting pro-Arab President Ali Nasir Mohammed, restoring water and power to Aden.
