Capital charter: On Delhi, its infrastructure
Nearly four months into her tenure, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta appears better positioned, with increased authority and resources, to address the capital’s pressing infrastructure and economic issues. Unlike her predecessors, she faces no governance friction with the Centre, as both the BJP and NCT administrations are aligned. At The Hindu Mind forum, Ms. Gupta emphasized her commitment to solving citizens’ everyday problems, acknowledging the city’s vast challenges ranging from electricity and water to education and urban planning. She criticized previous AAP and Congress governments for policy failures, arguing that AAP’s populism helped the poor but undermined Delhi’s middle-class aspirations and investment potential.Gupta has already delivered on promises like preventing flooding at Minto Bridge but faces wider issues such as rampant waterlogging. To address this, nodal officers have been appointed for accountability. She also stressed the need to reform erratic land-use regulations, implement the stalled land pooling policy, and bring consistency to school education. Gupta emphasized planned urban development, including repurposing agricultural land, and announced that a new Master Plan will integrate these priorities. With BJP’s control at all administrative levels, she has a significant opportunity to lead a transformative phase in Delhi’s growth.
A new cycle: On a new-look Indian cricket squad
Less than a week after South Africa’s victory in the ICC World Test Championship, a new cycle begins with Bangladesh touring Sri Lanka and India set to face England at Headingley on June 20, 2025. India enters this series with a revamped squad led by Shubman Gill, following the retirements of Kohli, Rohit, and Ashwin, and the exclusions of Rahane and Pujara. Historically, England has been a difficult tour for India since 1932, with only a few notable successes, though it remains a place of iconic moments in Indian cricket.Gill now leads a youthful team supported by experienced players like Jadeja, Rahul, Bumrah, and Nair. The young skipper must prove himself both as a batter and leader, especially during a transitional phase where even field positions like the slip cordon see new faces. Bumrah continues to be the pace spearhead, but will be rotated due to workload concerns, especially with Shami absent and Siraj stepping up. England, led by Ben Stokes and anchored by Joe Root, will pose a formidable challenge on home soil. This extended tour, lasting until August 4, offers Gill and vice-captain Pant the chance to shape a resilient and dynamic Indian side for the new WTC cycle.
