Language of unity: On Maharashtra and the issue of Hindi
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 mandates a flexible three-language formula, allowing States to choose any two Indian languages and one foreign language. However, concerns persist over Hindi becoming the default second Indian language, especially following Maharashtra’s initial move to prioritize Hindi, which was later withdrawn after political backlash. A committee led by Dr. Narendra Jadhav will now review the policy. The controversy has united political rivals against the BJP, which views the policy as a matter of national pride. Despite claims of neutrality, implementation remains skewed, with Hindi dominating and limited access to other regional languages. The BJP must reconsider its language strategy to promote true unity.
Whites on greens: On Wimbledon 2025
Wimbledon, known for its traditions, continues to modernize by eliminating line judges in favor of electronic calling across all courts. Despite such changes, the tournament retains its iconic charm. Top contenders in the men’s draw include World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, who share a budding rivalry, while veteran Novak Djokovic remains a strong threat on grass. In the women’s field, World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka leads a wide-open competition, with past champions and contenders like Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek, Barbora Krejcikova, Jasmine Paolini, and Elena Rybakina in the fray. India’s participation is limited to doubles, with players like Rohan Bopanna and others representing a tennis ecosystem struggling with systemic issues.
