Peace Momentum: On the White House Meetings and the Ukraine War
A rare summit at the White House, just days after a US-Russia meeting in Alaska, signals that all major leaders want an end to the Ukraine war. President Trump hosted European leaders and Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy, following talks with Russian President Putin. While there was no immediate deal, Trump expressed support for a possible security guarantee for Ukraine, as Europe made clear they would keep supporting Ukraine even if US weapons stop. Europe is planning its own “reassurance force” for Ukraine, but also knows it cannot match the US’s military support. The major issue in peace talks now is where to set the ceasefire line: Russia wants to control all of Donbas and freeze fighting in the south, but Ukraine and its allies reject giving away land. The leaders must now look for a middle path that keeps Ukraine safe and addresses Russia’s concerns, without wasting the current momentum for peace.

Sedition Redux: On Trampling on Press Freedom
The new sedition law in India, Section 152 of the BNS, is being used by some states to target journalists and media outlets who criticise the government. Recently, Assam Police summoned editors from The Wire under this law on the same day the Supreme Court agreed to examine its constitutional validity and protected the journalists from arrest. The summons lacked important details, raising concerns of police intimidation and a lack of transparency. Critics say Section 152 is basically a tougher and more vague version of the old colonial sedition law, making it easier to prosecute people for just speaking out, even if they have no intention to harm the country. The law’s loose language means even fair criticism of the government can be labelled a crime, threatening freedom of the press. While the Supreme Court has stepped in to check misuse in this case, unless the court properly reviews the law and sets strong limits, such laws can continue to silence dissent.

Recent Cloud Bursts Show — India Needs Early Warning Systems
Heavy rainfall and cloudbursts have caused destruction and loss of lives across India this monsoon, showing that the country needs better ways to predict and deal with extreme weather. Areas like Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Northeast India have suffered flash floods and landslides, while cities have faced waterlogging and chaos. Many of these problems could be prevented with better drainage and urban planning, but early warning systems are also essential. Accurate forecasts need lots of data, weather instruments, and strong communication between meteorologists and government officials. The India Meteorological Department is working to improve its data and warnings, but keeping people safe requires better maps, planning, and cooperation among different authorities. Building strong, climate-proof systems in risky areas is urgent and cannot be delayed.

With a New Format, in US Open Mixed Doubles, Charges of Gimmickry Will Be Difficult to Avoid
Mixed doubles tennis at big tournaments has lost attention because top players rarely join in, fewer people watch, and prize money has stayed the same. To change this, the US Open has started a new mixed doubles format with bigger prizes, shorter and faster matches, and big-name singles players participating. While organizers hope this will attract viewers, some think it makes the event feel like just a show and not a serious competition, especially since top doubles players are being pushed aside for singles stars. Critics say the tournament risks turning mixed doubles into just a commercial trick to promote the main singles events, unless the sport is shown as an important contest in its own right.
