Express View: Moving Past Tariff
The US government recently added a 25% penalty on Indian imports, raising total tariffs to 50%, making Indian goods very expensive in the US market and hurting exports. This action seems unfair because the US has not imposed similar penalties on other countries, like China or the EU, which also import oil and gas from Russia. The high tariff is expected to badly affect many Indian industries such as shrimps, textiles, leather, and jewelry, although some sectors like pharmaceuticals are exempt. Many exporters have already stopped production, and businesses may hesitate to invest in India due to the uncertain trade situation. The Indian government is standing firm but continues talks with the US on cooperation in energy and defense. India should decide its trade partners based on what benefits the country most and push ahead with domestic economic reforms urgently.

Vulnerable Tribal Groups Could Be Counted Separately
The Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) has asked the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India (RGI) to count Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) separately in the next Census. This would be the first time PVTGs get a separate count instead of being included with the larger Scheduled Tribes category. There are currently 75 PVTGs across India, who are the most marginalised tribal communities. The move will help create better plans and programmes to improve their lives.
The idea of recognising these groups began in the 1960s with the Dhebar Commission, which found that some tribal groups faced more problems than others. The category was first called Primitive Tribal Groups (PTGs) but was renamed PVTGs in 2006, as “primitive” was seen as offensive. PVTGs face many challenges, including very low female literacy and poor health. The government started a scheme called PM JANMAN in 2023 to help these groups with basic needs. Counting them separately in the Census will help better understand and serve their needs. The government may also need to update how it defines PVTGs. The current criteria are old and may exclude some communities because many have adopted modern tools and technologies. The focus should be on including them socially, not forcing them to fully fit into mainstream culture.
