Hockey glory: On India’s Asia Cup win at Rajgir
India’s hockey team strongly reinforced its top status in Asia by winning the Asia Cup at Rajgir, adding to previous wins in the Asian Games and the Asian Champions Trophy. This fourth Asia Cup title guarantees India a place at the 2026 World Cup and marks the country as the only men’s team to currently hold all three major Asian trophies. India began the tournament with some struggles but improved as it adjusted to the hot, challenging conditions, ultimately defeating Korea in the final. While India remains the top team in Asia and is ranked seventh in the world, bigger tests await against European and Australian teams, where results have been less impressive. Rising teams like China and Korea also pose real threats. With major tournaments coming up next year, including the World Cup and the Asian Games, Indian hockey now has momentum and another chance to prove its strength beyond Asia

Ranking pitfalls: On the India Rankings 2025
The India Rankings 2025, using the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), once again placed older, well-known public institutions at the top. While the number of participating universities and colleges has grown to over 14,000 across 17 categories, the system for ranking them still has weaknesses. One big issue is the “peer perception” parameter, which depends on opinions from employers and experts. This can be influenced by reputation and bias, making it harder for lesser-known and state universities to rise in the rankings. Another concern is how the framework treats “outreach and inclusivity” (OI) — it mostly measures regional and gender balance but ignores the situation of students from poor, marginalised, or disabled backgrounds, and whether institutions are recruiting teachers from various reserved categories. The editorial argues that the rankings must focus more on helping all groups access higher education and on ensuring honest practices and faculty quality, not just on creating elite brands. Otherwise, NIRF risks becoming a branding exercise rather than a tool to improve quality and fairness in India’s universities.

Russian cancer vaccine offers hope, but it is still not a breakthrough
Russian scientists have reported impressive results from Enteromix, a new cancer vaccine using mRNA technology, with early clinical trials showing 100% effectiveness and safety in shrinking tumours. The vaccine is designed to be personalised, starting with colorectal cancer, and more versions for other cancers are planned. However, experts caution that the trials were very small, involving fewer than 50 people, and results haven’t yet been published in peer-reviewed journals. Larger studies are needed before the vaccine can be considered a real breakthrough. mRNA cancer vaccines are also being developed in other countries and have shown promise against several types of cancer. The success of mRNA-based Covid vaccines accelerated this research field. Recent restrictions by US regulators may slow progress, making global research even more important. While the Russian results are hopeful, people should wait for more robust, widely-tested evidence.

A fourth Asia Cup reflects Indian hockey’s resurgence
India’s men’s hockey team has again confirmed its dominance in Asia by winning its fourth Asia Cup, securing a place in the next World Cup. Although India has a long and rich hockey history, winning consistently at the continental level hasn’t always happened. Teams like Pakistan and Korea used to challenge Indian supremacy, but they are now less threatening. This recent Asia Cup win shows Indian hockey’s ongoing revival, with the team playing better as a group under coaches like Craig Fulton. Veteran leaders and new young talent have combined to lift results. Despite this, India is still chasing greater international success, especially at the World Cup, where results have lagged for decades. The real test will be whether this positive trend continues on the world stage in the years ahead.
