Generational rage: On the upheaval in Nepal
Nepal has been rocked by violent protests, with government buildings set on fire and prisoners freed after a deadly crackdown on young demonstrators. This wave of destruction comes after years of unstable politics and broken promises since Nepal’s move to democracy in 2005. Frustrated with leaders who focus on power struggles instead of the country’s needs, many young people have left the country for jobs abroad. New political forces are emerging, but some are pushing ideas—like dissolving Parliament—that could actually harm democracy. The editorial warns that violence and destroying institutions cannot bring real democratic change. Instead, Nepal needs peace and long-term reforms to build a stable system that truly represents its people. The army must help restore order so democratic leaders can bring about needed reforms, or else the “new Nepal” dreamed of by earlier generations could collapse.

Man of faith: On C.P. Radhakrishnan, Vice-President-elect of India
C.P. Radhakrishnan, who has a long history with the RSS and BJP, has been elected as India’s new Vice-President. His selection reflects his lifelong commitment to the party’s ideology and a major step in his political career. He has served as a Member of Parliament, state BJP leader, and recently as Governor of Jharkhand and Maharashtra, gaining valuable experience. As Vice-President, his main challenge will be to chair the Rajya Sabha at a time when Parliament is deeply divided and Centre-State tensions are high. While he has previously supported federalism and better relations between the central and state governments, he now faces the task of making Parliament more cooperative. The hope is that his polite and friendly manner will help reduce hostilities between government and Opposition, bringing thoughtful discussion back to the Rajya Sabha.

Israel’s attack on Qatar shows Netanyahu has little regard for international opinion or domestic dissent
Israel’s recent military strike in Qatar, which targeted Hamas leaders meeting to discuss a possible ceasefire, has drawn widespread international criticism and made hopes for peace in Gaza even more distant. The attack killed several people and was carried out despite a US warning, angering both US President Trump and the government of Qatar, a close American ally and key player in the region. The strikes violate international laws that protect a country’s sovereignty, especially since the United Nations has not given permission for such force. This move is part of a pattern, as Israel has launched similar attacks across the Middle East despite objections from other countries. Meanwhile, pressure is increasing inside Israel from families of hostages and public protests demanding the war end. With major countries at the UN set to push for Palestinian statehood, Israel’s government seems determined to continue expanding the war, regardless of outside opinion or criticism at home.

India may be the favourite to win Asia Cup but Suryakumar Yadav’s team will be tested
India is widely expected to win this year’s Asia Cup cricket tournament, especially as the competition returns to the UAE, where the inaugural event was held in 1984. Over the years, India has become the dominant force in Asian cricket, benefiting from its deep talent pool developed through state T20 leagues and the IPL. However, this Asia Cup marks a big test for captain Suryakumar Yadav and a young, relatively new Indian squad, with senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli missing. The entry of Shubman Gill, who is also the Test captain, adds an interesting dynamic, especially as India is yet to appoint a regular ODI captain. Suryakumar’s leadership in T20s could be cemented by a title win here, but anything less could raise questions about India’s future line-ups.
