Relief for refugees: On the Immigration and Foreigners (Exemption) Order, 2025
India’s new Immigration and Foreigners (Exemption) Order, 2025, clarifies who can stay in India without passports or visas, including Sri Lankan Tamil refugees who have lived in Tamil Nadu for decades. This order protects these refugees from being forcibly sent back, as long as they arrived before January 9, 2015 and registered themselves. While this is a relief, questions remain, since these refugees are still legally treated as “illegal migrants” and face barriers to Indian citizenship or Long Term Visas (LTVs), which would let them work and study more easily. The editorial suggests that the Indian government should make it easier for eligible Sri Lankan Tamils to get LTVs, following the system made for Tibetan refugees. Looking forward, both India and Sri Lanka should work together on voluntary repatriation with support, or help refugees settle locally, always focusing on treating them humanely

Reckless escalation: On Israel’s attack on Qatar
Israel’s recent strike on Qatar, targeting Hamas leaders, marks a dangerous increase in the region’s conflict and makes peace in Gaza even harder to achieve. The attack—despite Qatar’s role as a key US ally and important mediator—was strongly criticised around the world. Even close partners like the US spoke out against it. Israel has attacked several countries in the region, including Iran and now Qatar, showing little regard for international rules or ongoing peace efforts. The strike puts Qatar’s efforts to help negotiate a Gaza ceasefire at risk and threatens the slow progress towards normalisation between Israel and Arab countries. The editorial says that India, with strong interests in the Gulf and millions of its citizens there, should be more outspoken in criticising Israel’s actions and work with others to restore peace and stability in the region..

This September, Saturn’s silent ballet
Saturn, the giant planet with its stunning rings and dozens of moons, is putting on a special show this September. As Earth moves between Saturn and the Sun on September 21, the planet grows brighter in our sky—reaching a position called “opposition”. This year, at the same time, Saturn’s rings will appear to almost disappear, becoming a thin line known as “ring crossing,” an event that only happens every 15 years. Scientists encourage everyone to look at Saturn in the night sky, not just for its beauty but as a reminder of nature’s quiet rhythms and our small place in the universe. In a world full of noise, conflict, and distraction, Saturn’s silent presence and wonders can inspire awe, curiosity, and humility.

Express View: In Nepal, after the crisis
Nepal’s recent unrest, triggered by a social media ban and long-standing problems with political corruption and instability, has created both danger and opportunity. While Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s resignation marks a turning point, true democracy will require not just the collapse of old institutions, but a careful and united movement toward fair elections and reforms. Young protest leaders must overcome their differences, agree on clear goals, and ensure their voices are genuinely included in new political arrangements. Political parties should not block this transition but instead help restore order and support an independent inquiry into recent violence. Nepal’s future depends on avoiding the mistakes of neighbouring Bangladesh, making real progress towards law, order, and a more hopeful, youth-driven democracy.
