Holistic Approach: On Dealing with North India’s Stubble Burning
The Supreme Court has suggested prosecuting farmers who burn crop stubble, a practice that worsens winter air pollution in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. Despite clear knowledge of its harmful effects, efforts to tackle stubble burning have been inconsistent. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), set up to address cross-border pollution, has struggled to act independently and often bends to political pressures. While Punjab has misrepresented farm fire data, debt-ridden farmers continue burning stubble due to a lack of alternatives. Instead of blaming farmers or threatening jail, authorities must focus on better incentives, transparent monitoring, strong enforcement, and cooperative governance across states. Tackling pollution requires consistent and multi-pronged strategies, not piecemeal solutions.

Troubled Transition: On the Nepal Protests and After
After violent protests that left 74 dead, Nepal’s elected government has collapsed, Parliament was dissolved, and former jurist Sushila Karki now heads an interim administration until elections in 2026. Protesters, many from Gen Z, raised genuine concerns such as corruption, poor governance and restrictions on free speech, but their violent acts — including burning Parliament and the Supreme Court — severely harmed Nepal’s democratic framework. The dissolution of Parliament also appeared unconstitutional under the 2015 Constitution. While Nepal has struggled with half-hearted implementation of constitutional reforms since the civil war and the end of monarchy in 2006, the interim government must not give in to illegitimate demands from online groups lacking accountability. Instead, it should punish violence, safeguard institutions, and prepare for democratic elections. The enduring task is to preserve Nepal’s pluralist, republican identity while encouraging renewal in political leadership without dismantling democracy itself.

Fed Cuts Rates — Now to Ensure Price Stability and Employment
The US Federal Reserve cut its key interest rate by 25 basis points to 4–4.25%, its first move in nine months, citing a weakening labour market. While some wanted deeper cuts, the Fed signalled that more reductions could follow. Employment growth has slowed sharply, unemployment is edging up, and inflation risks remain, with the Fed pushing back its 2% inflation goal to 2028. Though growth forecasts were slightly raised, economic uncertainty lingers. Fed Chair Jerome Powell noted the challenges of balancing weak jobs and stubborn inflation while also facing political pressure from Donald Trump, who has criticised the central bank and its independence. Powell must now carefully navigate monetary policy to achieve the Fed’s dual mandate of price stability and maximum employment.

Jerry of Ben & Jerry Has Quit — Lessons From His Legacy
Ben & Jerry’s began in 1977 when two friends, Jerry Greenfield and Ben Cohen, turned a failed dream into an ice‑cream venture from a petrol pump in Vermont. Their brand became known not just for creative flavours but also for a commitment to social justice — supporting causes from racial and LGBTQ+ rights to climate activism. On September 17, Jerry resigned, saying he had been “silenced” by parent company Unilever, which has often clashed with the founders over issues like sales in Israeli‑occupied areas. Yet their legacy remains: showing that business can balance profit with social responsibility. Examples like Ben & Jerry’s — and even Indian company Hidesign, which recently condemned violence in Gaza — highlight that companies can choose to act on ethics, not just earnings. Their lesson is clear: the “real world” is shaped by the values that businesses and people choose to uphold.
