IMF’s 2025 Outlook – Resilience Amid Global Uncertainty
At the recent IMF–World Bank annual meetings, IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva delivered a clear warning — “uncertainty is the new normal.” Despite a relatively stable global growth forecast of 3.3% in 2024, 3.2% in 2025, and 3.1% in 2026, underlying global tensions threaten the fragile balance. Georgieva highlighted that while global averages show progress over decades, deep inequalities, political discontent, and demographic transitions continue to shape instability. The IMF noted that despite fears sparked by President Donald Trump’s tariff measures earlier this year, the global economy has adapted surprisingly well, helped by prudent fiscal and monetary policies, private sector adjustments, and a surge in Artificial Intelligence–driven innovation. Many nations refrained from retaliatory tariffs, allowing inflation control and preventing recessions. However, the IMF cautioned that this resilience remains fragile: markets could still face shocks as the AI boom risks mirroring the Dotcom bubble of the 1990s. Rising global debt ratios and growing demand for gold reflect investor anxiety. India’s recognition as a key engine of global growth offers cause for optimism, but Georgieva’s message is clear — policymakers must remain vigilant, as economic calm could shift quickly in an age defined by unpredictability.

COP30 – A Tired Summit Still Holds Urgent Promise
With the 2025 UN Climate Conference (COP30) approaching in Belem, Brazil, expectations remain low even as the climate emergency intensifies. The World Meteorological Organisation’s report shows atmospheric carbon dioxide levels hitting another record high in 2024, highlighting a decade of failure under the Paris Agreement. Global CO₂ emissions have risen from 39.6 to 41.6 billion tonnes since 2015, while the U.S. under President Donald Trump has again exited the accord, undermining global trust. Many developing nations, frustrated by unfulfilled promises, now question the process’s credibility. Yet, despite its flaws, COP remains the world’s only multilateral mechanism capable of framing collective climate action.
For India, COP30’s significance lies in its upcoming Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for 2035 and its first National Adaptation Plan (NAP). These documents will outline emission goals and strategies to counter climate impacts. While modest ambitions might align with other major emitters like China, India must pursue an assertive domestic strategy. Accelerating clean energy adoption could lead to technological transformation, growth, and resilience — essential to achieving economic and environmental stability by 2047. India’s global leadership initiatives, such as the International Solar Alliance and Coalition for Disaster-Resilient Infrastructure, underscore its potential to guide the Global South. For that promise to be realised, India and the world must treat COP30 not as another political ritual but as a renewed chance for collective accountability and climate leadership.

Commonwealth Games 2030 – India’s Opportunity for Sporting Renewal
India is once again set to host the Commonwealth Games, twenty years after the controversial 2010 Delhi edition. The 2030 Games, likely to be held in Ahmedabad, come at a time when enthusiasm for the event is low after the troubled 2022 and 2026 editions. Yet, for India, this presents a strategic opportunity — to revitalise its sports ecosystem and strengthen its claim as a future Olympic host. The Delhi Games had brought India a record 101 medals and ignited new energy across disciplines such as wrestling, athletics, and gymnastics. Improved funding, modern training, and exposure programs contributed to India’s success, which extended to the London 2012 Olympics. However, the legacy was overshadowed by corruption scandals and administrative inefficiency that eroded public trust. As the nation prepares for 2030, learning from those mistakes is crucial. Success this time must be defined not just by medals but by transparent governance, sustainable infrastructure, and long-term athlete development. If executed well, CWG 2030 could mark India’s transformation from a sports participant to a global sports organiser — setting the stage for its 2036 Olympic ambitions and reinforcing its position as a true sporting destination.
