New reckoning: On Nitish Kumar’s tenth term in Bihar
Nitish Kumar has begun his tenth term as Chief Minister of Bihar, reflecting remarkable political longevity and the strong electoral performance of the JD(U), which doubled its seat tally to 85. His success is largely due to a carefully built social coalition among EBCs, Dalits, and women voters, which, combined with BJP and NDA allies’ support, helped the alliance secure a decisive victory. Despite electoral success, Bihar faces severe socioeconomic challenges: it ranks lowest on most indicators, has vast out-migration due to lack of jobs, a stagnant economy dependent on fragmented agriculture and government jobs, and limited industrial growth. The government prioritized infrastructure like roads but neglected education and healthcare. The Opposition has failed to turn these weaknesses into political gains due to fragmented support and organizational weaknesses. While welfare schemes have shielded the government from backlash, Bihar needs sustainable solutions. Nitish Kumar’s new term must focus on economic transformation by promoting sectors like food processing, facilitating investment, and pursuing land reforms to transfer land to sharecroppers. This term should be judged on developmental impact rather than electoral calculations.

Epstein exposure: On Trump and the Epstein files
After months of political pressure, US President Donald Trump signed a bill requiring the Department of Justice (DoJ) to release files about convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who died in prison in 2019. The bipartisan legislation passed overwhelmingly in Congress, mandating disclosure of all investigation files within 30 days, except details that could reveal victims’ identities. This move came despite Trump’s earlier opposition and downplaying of the release, which some saw as a Democrat-led effort. The released documents include communications involving Epstein and notable figures like Trump, former UK Prince Andrew, Steve Bannon, and Larry Summers. Trump denies involvement in Epstein’s crimes but has acknowledged friendship with Epstein and says he cut ties years ago. To divert attention, Trump suggested investigating Epstein’s links to other prominent figures, including former President Bill Clinton. The controversy threatens Trump politically, especially among women voters in his conservative base, raising questions about the impact on his support and the broader MAGA movement.

Curaçao’s World Cup qualification is a football fairytale
Curaçao, a tiny Caribbean island, has made history as the smallest nation ever to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, highlighting football’s global reach. Joined by other small nations like Cape Verde and Haiti, Curaçao embodies how football allows even countries with small populations and modest budgets to shine on the world stage. Despite joining FIFA only in 2010, Curaçao used the expanded 48-team format of the 2026 World Cup in North America to their advantage. The team is coached by Dick Advocaat, a former Dutch coach who reached the World Cup quarterfinals in 1994, and one of the oldest coaches in the tournament at 78. Although only one player in the squad was born on the island, players with Curaçaoan roots from professional leagues abroad brought a shared identity that propelled the team to qualify. Critics argue that expanding the World Cup weakens the quality, but broad representation boosts the sport’s global spirit. With traditionally strong teams like Italy failing to qualify, the allure of the World Cup lies in giving smaller nations their moment of glory.

MbS gets red carpet in DC, he will ask for more
In 2019, Joe Biden had vowed to isolate Saudi Arabia following the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, which U.S. intelligence linked to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS). However, seven years later, MbS made a diplomatic comeback with a grand welcome at the White House from President Donald Trump, including agreements for F-35 fighter jets, AI chip access, and a prominent role in shaping West Asia’s future. Trump designated Saudi Arabia as a “major non-NATO ally” and approved F-35 sales despite Israeli concerns, who currently maintain exclusivity over the aircraft in the region to protect their air superiority. Trump also seemed to dismiss Khashoggi’s murder lightly. For Saudi Arabia, the priority is defense cooperation and large-scale investments, while MbS reportedly supported Trump’s business interests. Trump mainly seeks Saudi recognition of Israel through the Abraham Accords, but MbS insists on Palestinian statehood as a condition for normalisation. Israel remains the main obstacle, with PM Netanyahu assuring his coalition against changes. MbS must balance domestic and regional expectations by preserving the Palestinian cause while leveraging relations with Washington. Trump appears ready to strengthen ties despite Saudi Arabia’s controversial human rights record.
