Tough choices: On the Congress in Karnataka
Donald Trump, with his entertainment background including film cameos and The Apprentice, has greenlit Rush Hour 4 amid his presidential duties, prompting quick studio acquiescence from Paramount Skydance. The original Rush Hour franchise (1998, 2001, 2006) starred Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan in cop/buddy comedies that declined in success over time, further stalled by 2017 sexual assault allegations against director Brett Ratner, effectively ending his career. Ratner has returned with a documentary on First Lady Melania Trump, paralleling the unlikely revival of this dormant franchise. While Hollywood faces a tough year, rebooting Rush Hour via White House influence raises concerns about creative integrity rather than genuine rejuvenation.

2030 for 2036: On Ahmedabad, the CWG, the Olympics
Ahmedabad has been officially confirmed as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking the centenary edition of the Games and the second time India will host after New Delhi in 2010. The decision was made at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow, where Ahmedabad won over Abuja, Nigeria. This selection is strategic as India has also submitted Ahmedabad’s bid to host the 2036 Olympics, showcasing the city as a major sports destination. Ahmedabad has recently hosted several international sporting events and is developing world-class venues such as the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, which will include the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium and facilities for aquatic, football, and indoor sports. The city aims to offer 15 to 17 sports disciplines during the Games, with athletics, swimming, table tennis, boxing, and others confirmed. The 2030 CWG is seen as not only a celebration of a century of Commonwealth sporting culture but also a launching pad for India’s elevated global sports ambitions and growth of sports infrastructure, youth engagement, and international cooperation

GDP growth is robust, GST cuts and US tariffs will shape momentum
The Indian economy grew strongly at 8.2% in the second quarter of the current fiscal year, exceeding the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) projection of 7%. Despite some concerns about slower growth in the year’s second half, the economy’s 8% growth in the first half raises the likelihood of surpassing 7% for the full year. Agriculture grew healthily by 3.5%, expected to improve further following a good monsoon. Manufacturing expanded robustly at 9.1%, notably higher than the industrial production index average of just under 5% during the period. The services sector also showed strong growth, driven by financial, real estate, and professional services. Bank of Baroda economists reported net sales growth of 6.3% and net profits rising 15.5%. Private consumption and investments grew steadily, but government non-interest, non-subsidy consumption reduced by 6.4% from April to October. Nominal GDP increased about 8.8% in the first half, below the 10.1% assumed by the Union Budget 2025-26, impacting taxes, debt, and deficit. With inflation below the RBI’s target, rate cuts are possible soon. The full impact of the September 22 GST rate cuts will be clearer in the third quarter, with private vehicle sales rising. However, US tariffs have affected exports, which fell by 9% in October. The Monetary Policy Committee will balance these growth, inflation, and external factors when deciding on interest rates.

IFFI must match ambition with a greater sense of purp
The 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), held recently in Goa, remains one of the country’s most prestigious film festivals, alongside Kerala’s International Film Festival and Mumbai’s MAMI Festival. With over 240 films from 81 countries, including premieres and tributes, it showcased a rich mix of global and Indian cinema. Honouring legends like Rajinikanth and celebrating diverse regional cinemas, IFFI also featured industry talks, such as the WAVES Film Bazaar, and masterclasses exploring filmmaking innovations, including AI. However, despite its grand scale, the festival often focuses more on celebrity appearances and official speeches than on nurturing new talent or shaping cinematic sensibilities. IFFI’s true purpose should be investing in lesser-known filmmakers and independent voices, much like its earlier years, when festival films pushed artistic boundaries. A truly national festival would embrace all kinds of stories—mainstream, marginal, and everything in between—ensuring cinema’s cultural and creative growth across India.
