Indigo Flight Crisis and Air Safety
India’s largest airline Indigo caused massive domestic flight disruptions in December 2025 during peak travel season due to misinterpreting DGCA’s new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) rules that increased pilot rest from 36 to 48 hours and limited night landings, alongside tech glitches and weather issues, stranding passengers including seniors, medical patients, and Siachen defence personnel while international flights faced fewer cuts due to revenue and compensation norms. Parliament raised concerns as DGCA data showed disproportionate flight increases against limited crew, prompting fare caps, directives, and temporary FDTL waivers despite pilot unions flagging safety dilution in the duopoly market. The chaos underscores weak regulation allowing private carriers to slide into disorder, demanding stringent monitoring, better passenger rights, and compensation without fear or favour to prevent aviation meltdowns.

Balancing, Not Swinging: On India-Russia Ties, Indian Diplomacy
India hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin for the 25th anniversary of the strategic partnership during his first Delhi visit since the 2022 Ukraine invasion, despite Western isolation efforts, ICC warrant against Putin, escalated attacks, and pressures from sanctions on Russian/Indian oil firms plus U.S. 25% tariffs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal reception and state visit—firsts in his tenure—signaled Russia’s enduring friendship without war criticism, while economic highlights included a labour mobility pact, urea plant MoU, and roadmap from Modi’s 2024 Moscow trip promoting trade, maritime connectivity, and national currency payments to bypass sanctions aiming for $100 billion bilateral trade by 2030.

Hold IndiGo to Account, DGCA Shouldn’t Buckle
India’s third-largest domestic aviation market faced chaos with hundreds of daily IndiGo flight cancellations, stranding thousands amid peak travel, incurring costs from rebookings at higher fares, lost hotels, and missed events; blame falls on IndiGo’s misjudgement despite phased Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) rules from July 1 and November 1 to curb pilot fatigue via more rest and fewer night/red-eye flights, and DGCA’s temporary relaxations.
IndiGo data to DGCA reveals crew shortages—needing 2,422 captains (has 2,357) and 2,153 first officers (has 2,194)—disrupting its dense high-frequency network it should have foreseen. The duopoly (IndiGo 60%+, Air India 27%) exposed fragility as supply couldn’t meet demand, prompting government price caps; DGCA’s buckling raises safety doubts, demanding accountability, reduced entry barriers, more competitors, and strict regulation prioritising pilot welfare over convenience

Not Inviting Leader of Opposition Makes Government Look Small
In a democracy like India, political rivalry is natural but must respect decency and institutions. This was seen on Constitution Day when top leaders, including the President, Prime Minister, and Leaders of Opposition (LoP) from both Houses, jointly read the Preamble, symbolising shared legitimacy from the Constitution. However, the government’s exclusion of Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, the LoPs in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, from the state dinner for Russian President Putin undermines this spirit. While BJP notes Gandhi’s past absences from state events, such conduct doesn’t justify denying the LoP’s constitutional role and public representation. The government, in its 12th year, should confidently invite all major opposition leaders, reflecting India’s democratic strength, not as a courtesy but as a statement of inclusion. Cooperation during national crises, like post-Operation Sindoor delegations, shows political unity despite disagreements. Denying LoP’s invitation weakens the government’s image and dims the democratic ethos of ensuring all voices, even opposition, have a respected place at the highest table.
