On Mute – On the US Geopolitical Turmoil, India’s Response
India has stayed mostly silent amid recent US geopolitical tensions, such as the military action in Venezuela that captured President Nicolás Maduro, choosing careful diplomacy over strong statements. New Delhi expressed brief concern for peace and focused on protecting Indian citizens there, avoiding direct criticism of Washington while not aligning fully with China or Russia. This reflects India’s strategy of strategic autonomy in a multipolar world, prioritising economic interests like discounted Russian oil and diversified partnerships over picking sides in distant conflicts. As BRICS president in 2026, India balances ties with the US for defence and tech, Russia for energy, and China through measured engagement like the SCO Summit. Such caution helps India derisk from over-reliance on any power, maintain flexibility, and focus on domestic growth amid global shifts

Mumbai’s Civic Polls Are Done. Now, Fix Its Problems
The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance won strongly in the recent Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections and other municipal bodies across Maharashtra, gaining control in key cities like Pune, Nashik, and Nagpur after success in the November 2024 Assembly polls. This victory ended nearly 30 years of Shiv Sena dominance in Mumbai, where the city’s diverse population rejected divisive politics based on regional identity and past grievances. Civic problems like blocked drains, potholed roads, poor public transport, overflowing landfills, and polluted water bodies were ignored during the campaign, which focused on identity issues, religious divides, and promises of cash handouts. An investigation showed BMC funds mostly went to Mahayuti areas from 2023-2025, favouring BJP over opposition zones. The new BJP administration must govern inclusively, fix urgent infrastructure issues fairly, and serve all citizens to honour its mandate.

From Under-19 World Cup, a Message: Cricket Embraces Migrant and Post-Colonial Spirit
The Under-19 Cricket World Cup shows how cricket has grown more inclusive and diverse, with South Asian languages and players prominent across teams. Among 240 players in Namibia and Zimbabwe, 92 have South Asian roots, making up 26 percent, including Hindi speakers in 10 of 16 teams, Punjabi in seven, and Gujarati, Telugu, Malayalam in four. Teams outside South Asia feature Urdu, Tamil, Sinhala, and Marathi speakers. England relies on two Pakistani-descent players, Australia has two Indians and two Sri Lankans, New Zealand four Indians, and USA fields a full team of second-generation Indians despite tough visa policies. Once divided by race in Africa, class in England and Australia, and facing loyalty tests for migrants like Lord Tebbit’s idea, cricket now reflects migration’s impact. Like football in Europe where immigrants strengthen teams in England, France, Spain, Belgium, Portugal, and even Italy, cricket sheds its colonial past for a post-colonial, migrant-driven future.
