RRB JE CBT 1 Exam Date 2026: Vacancies, Eligibility and Exam Pattern
The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) have published CEN 04/2026 for Junior Engineer (JE) and Depot Material Superintendent (DMS) posts. The notification lists 3,993 vacancies at Pay Level 6 with an initial pay of Rs 35,400. The first stage, CBT-1, is tentatively planned for 27, 28, and 30 October 2026.

The exam city intimation will reach candidates about 10 days before the CBT, and the e-call letter about 4 days before it. The modification window is a one-time chance, so use it carefully.
Vacancy and Pay
CEN 04/2026 carries 3,993 vacancies. All posts sit at Pay Level 6 of the 7th Pay Commission, with a starting pay of Rs 35,400.
Eligibility Criteria
Age Limit (as on 01.01.2027)
The age range is 18 to 33 years. A candidate must be born on or before 01.01.2009 to meet the minimum age. For the upper limit, the date of birth should not be earlier than the following:
- UR and EWS: 02.01.1994
- OBC-NCL: 02.01.1991
- SC and ST: 02.01.1989
Relaxations apply as per the notification: 5 years for SC and ST, 3 years for OBC-NCL, 10, 13, and 15 years for persons with benchmark disabilities depending on category, and 3, 6, and 8 years for eligible ex-servicemen.
Educational Qualification
The posts need a diploma or a degree in engineering. The qualifications are grouped into four exam groups: Mechanical and Allied, Electrical and Allied, Electronics and Allied, and Civil and Allied. Candidates must check the exact discipline against the post they want. For Depot Material Superintendent, a three-year diploma in any engineering discipline is enough.
Application Fee
The general fee is Rs 500. Candidates who appear in CBT-1 get Rs 400 back after bank charges are deducted.
The fee is Rs 250 for SC, ST, ex-servicemen, persons with benchmark disabilities, female candidates, transgender candidates, minorities, and economically backward classes. This amount is refunded in full, after bank charges, once the candidate appears in CBT-1.
Selection Process
Selection has four stages:
- Computer Based Test 1 (CBT-1)
- Computer Based Test 2 (CBT-2)
- Document Verification
- Medical Examination
For CBT-2, the number of shortlisted candidates is 15 times the community-wise vacancies. Candidates called for document verification equal the number of vacancies, based on CBT-2 merit.
CBT-1 Exam Pattern
CBT-1 has 100 questions and runs for 90 minutes. Candidates who use a scribe get 120 minutes. Each wrong answer carries a negative mark of one-third.

CBT-1 is qualifying in nature. The minimum percentage is 40 for UR and EWS, 30 for OBC and SC, and 25 for ST.

CBT-2 has 150 questions and a duration of 120 minutes, with one-third negative marking.
