Eligibility Criteria
Age Limit (as on 01.07.2026)
For candidates outside the reserved communities, the minimum age is 18 for most posts. It is 21 for Village Administrative Officer, Forest Watcher, and Forest Guard with Driving Licence, and 25 for Executive Officer (Grade IV). The maximum age for these candidates is 30 for most posts and 35 for Executive Officer (Grade IV).
Candidates from SC, SC(A), ST, MBC/DC, BC(OBCM), and BCM categories get higher limits. For Village Administrative Officer, the maximum is 40. For many other posts it is 32 for BC(OBCM), BCM, and MBC/DC candidates and 35 for SC, SC(A), and ST candidates. The notification adds that there is no maximum age limit for these categories if the candidate holds a general educational qualification higher than the minimum one. Concessions for persons with benchmark disability, ex-servicemen, and destitute widows are listed post by post, so check the age table in the notification before applying.
Educational Qualification
The minimum general educational qualification is a pass in the Tamil Nadu Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination. Village Administrative Officer, Junior Assistant (Non Security), Bill Collector, and Revenue Assistant posts fall in this group.
Some posts ask for more:
- Junior Assistant (Post Code 3521): a degree from a UGC-recognised university
- Junior Assistant (Post Codes 3520 and 3848): a B.Com. degree
- Typist and Steno Typist posts: a government technical examination pass in typewriting, and in shorthand for Steno Typist, along with the Certificate Course in Computer on Office Automation in most cases
For several typing posts, candidates without the computer certificate may still apply. If selected, they must acquire it within the probation period or within two years of appointment.
Knowledge of Tamil
Every candidate must have adequate knowledge of Tamil on the date of notification. This is met by passing SSLC, HSC, or a degree with Tamil as a language, studying in Tamil medium, or passing the Second Class Language Test in Tamil conducted by TNPSC.
Application Fee
The examination fee is Rs 100, paid while submitting the online application. Candidates in special categories can claim a fee exemption as per Annexure II of the notification. Persons with benchmark disability and destitute widows get a full exemption.
Fees can be paid by net banking, credit card, debit card, or UPI on or before the last date. An application without the prescribed fee is rejected.
Candidates must also complete a One Time Registration (OTR) on the commission’s portal before applying. The OTR fee is Rs 150, and the registration stays valid for five years.
Exam Pattern
The Group IV examination is a single-stage written test. It is one paper of three hours, held in OMR mode with objective-type questions.
| Part | Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Tamil Eligibility cum Scoring Test | 100 | 150 |
| B | General Studies (SSLC standard) | 75 | 150 for Parts B and C together |
| C | Aptitude and Mental Ability | 25 | |
| Total | 200 | 300 |
The minimum qualifying mark is 90 for all communities. Parts B and C are checked only if a candidate scores at least 40 percent, which is 60 marks, in Part A. Part A questions are in Tamil, while Parts B and C are in both Tamil and English.
Differently abled candidates who studied English only in their board or university can skip the Tamil test and take General English (SSLC standard) instead.
Selection Process
The ranking depends on the total marks in the written examination. If marks tie, the candidate with the higher qualification ranks first, and age and application number are the next tie-breakers.
After the written test, shortlisted candidates go through on-screen certificate verification. For Village Administrative Officer, Junior Assistant, Typist, and Steno Typist posts, the ratio is 1:3 for the general category and 1:2 for reserved categories. Physical certificate verification and counselling follow.
For Forest Guard with Driving Licence and Forest Watcher, the ratio at on-screen verification is 1:6. These candidates also take a Physical Standards Test and an Endurance Test, a walk of 25 km for male candidates and 16 km for female and third gender candidates, to be completed in four hours. Both tests are held only in Chennai.
