Fascinating finale: On India’s cricketing tour of England
India’s cricket tour of England ended in a 2-2 draw, showing how evenly matched the teams were. Despite missing key players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, India fought strongly. The series proved that five-day Test matches still offer thrilling cricket, with every match going to the final day. England’s attacking ‘Bazball’ style challenged India, but bowlers like Siraj responded with determination. Injuries affected both teams due to their packed schedules. Siraj’s consistent bowling and Gill’s 754 runs were highlights for India. Though the team is going through a transition, their efforts show great promise for the future.

A crisis of trust: On the Election Commission of India
The fairness of elections is vital in a democracy, especially for those who lose. If they believe the process was unfair, it leads to a loss of trust. Rahul Gandhi has raised serious allegations against the Election Commission of India (ECI), claiming problems in the 2024 election. Although political leaders have questioned the ECI before, the commission must always act fairly and openly. Some recent actions of the ECI, including unclear communication about vote-counting machines and voter roll errors, have made people doubt its transparency. To maintain public confidence, the ECI must work honestly, respond to concerns properly, and show that the election system is trustworthy.

Dishom Guru Shibu Soren
Shibu Soren, a tribal leader from Jharkhand who passed away at 81, started his journey after his father was killed by moneylenders. Vowing to fight for Adivasi rights, he led movements to reclaim land and later helped found the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha in 1972. His efforts united both tribal and non-tribal communities to achieve statehood, which was finally granted in 2000. Despite facing serious allegations and controversies, including court cases and corruption charges, he remained a powerful voice for Adivasis. Shibu Soren’s political life was marked by dedication, resilience, and a strong vision that went beyond identity politics.

Express View: In the wake of Trump’s latest moves, Delhi must push ahead with the trade deal
After the US imposed a 25% tariff on Indian imports and warned of further penalties, India has started preparing trade concessions for upcoming talks. While some sensitive sectors like agriculture may be protected, India still needs to improve market access to the US, especially since the new tariffs may affect its export competitiveness. India may offer to increase defence and oil purchases and ease restrictions in certain areas. Despite harsh criticism from President Trump, India has responded calmly and should continue to negotiate a trade deal that benefits both sides. At the same time, India must push domestic reforms to stay competitive globally.
