Judicial overreach: On the top court and democratic dissent
The Supreme Court recently paused defamation charges against Rahul Gandhi, a Congress leader, but made comments questioning his patriotism. This raises concern, as the Court should focus on legal matters, not judge who is a “true Indian”. Gandhi had criticised the government’s actions at the India-China border, which is a valid part of democratic politics. Criticism of the government should not be seen as being against the country — it is a key part of free speech. Evidence, like reports and satellite images, supports Gandhi’s claims about border issues with China. While the Court has the power to decide on legal matters, it must avoid passing moral judgments. Doing so may suppress healthy debate and weaken democracy. The focus should remain on fair legal judgment, which will help maintain trust in the justice system and support open political discussion.

Sleeping disasters: On the Uttarakhand disaster, the Himalayas
In Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, a deadly flood caused by heavy rainfall destroyed homes and took many lives, highlighting the constant risk in the Himalayas. The downpour from August 3 to 5 may have caused a sudden rush of water, mud, and debris through the area. Authorities called it a “cloudburst,” although this term has a specific meaning and there is no clear data to confirm it. Continuous rain and unstable mountain terrain likely led to this disaster. Sadly, such events are becoming more common due to climate change. Often, officials react by offering sympathy and small aid, calling the events rare. However, these are not rare anymore. The government must monitor dangerous areas and manage the debris and silt buildup to reduce future risks.

A reality dating show presented by US Open: Love games look good only in matches
The US Open is introducing a dating reality show called “Game, Set, Matchmaker,” featuring a former skating champion and seven suitors, filmed at the tournament venue. The show will be released on YouTube, ending during the women’s final. While this aims to attract attention, critics argue it distracts from the real spirit of tennis. Tennis has made small changes like streaming and dress code updates, but in the US, viewership still struggles. Turning the sport into a reality show may go too far. Tennis is naturally dramatic and emotional — its true appeal lies in the game itself, not in gimmicks. To stay relevant, the sport must focus on genuine stories and trust that audiences appreciate the real game.

RBI keeps interest rates unchanged. But what will dictate policy action?
In its August meeting, the RBI kept the repo rate unchanged at 5.5% and continued with a neutral approach. This was expected after previous rate cuts in June. The RBI cited uncertain economic conditions as the reason. It also lowered its inflation forecast for the year to 3.1% due to lower food prices and good monsoon results. While core inflation rose slightly to 4.4% in June, it remains limited to some areas. The RBI expects inflation to rise again in early 2026, reducing the chance of more rate cuts. Despite global issues, the RBI has kept its growth projection at 6.5% for the year. Governor Malhotra mentioned concerns like weak global demand and market instability. Future policy will depend on whether growth or inflation changes from current forecasts.
