Graveyard Gaza: On Israel’s Netanyahu and control over Gaza
Israel’s Security Cabinet has approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan to expand military operations and seize control of Gaza City, pushing the conflict in Gaza into an even more severe phase. This move comes despite overwhelming international condemnation and urgent warnings about the catastrophic humanitarian crisis that has unfolded in the Palestinian enclave. Major human rights organisations and genocide scholars have described the situation as genocidal, citing the forced starvation, widespread famine, and high mortality among children due to malnutrition. Prominent former Israeli leaders—including two ex-prime ministers and several former IDF chiefs—are calling for an immediate end to the war. Countries long counted as Israel’s allies, such as France, the U.K., and Canada, have demanded a ceasefire and stated intentions to recognise Palestinian statehood.

Language Lessons: On Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and State Education Policies
Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are asserting their autonomy by planning school education with a two-language policy—prioritising local languages (Tamil or Kannada) and English—rather than adopting the three-language model recommended by the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Tamil Nadu’s State Education Policy (SEP) 2025 continues its longstanding commitment to Tamil and English only, rejecting the addition of Hindi or any other Indian language as compulsory. Karnataka, following its recent SEP Commission’s recommendations, aims to switch from three languages to two: Kannada or the child’s mother tongue, and English, with Kannada as the medium of instruction at least up to Class 5, and ideally up to Class 12. Both states want to move away from standardised NCERT textbooks, favouring localised curriculum and bilingual teaching.

For India and US, Agricultural Trade Could Be a Win-Win Option
India has drawn clear red lines on protecting the interests of its farmers, livestock rearers, and fisherfolk in its stalled trade talks with the US. Agriculture remains a sensitive sector for India, especially regarding imports of US farm products like genetically modified (GM) maize and soyabean, fuel ethanol, and dairy items. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed that India will not compromise on these interests, partly due to domestic political considerations and partly due to the economic impact of US tariffs.

Express View on Rahul Gandhi’s Vote Chori Claims: The EC Must Answer
Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition, has alleged large-scale “vote chori” (vote theft) in the 2024 Karnataka Lok Sabha elections, claiming over one lakh votes in the Mahadevapura segment were fraudulent due to duplicate entries, fake addresses, and misuse of voter forms. Similar accusations were made earlier in Maharashtra. While irregularities in voter rolls are real and need periodic corrections, there is no clear evidence that these were engineered to benefit the BJP. The Election Commission’s ongoing voter roll revision has flaws but remains necessary. By making “stolen elections” the core of its campaign, the Congress risks avoiding serious internal reforms and could isolate itself politically. Even if Gandhi’s claims are unproven, the EC should respond promptly and substantively to such allegations from the Opposition, as it has acted in other states. In times of political polarisation, the EC must rebuild public trust, avoid defensive or biased appearances, and ensure transparency in addressing concerns over the electoral process.
