Déjà vu: On India’s Monsoon Vulnerabilities
Heavy monsoon rains have caused major damage across North India, with floods cutting off districts, destroying villages and farmland, and leading to many deaths. The weather has become much more unpredictable, with very intense rains happening in short bursts, making things worse for both mountains and plains. This leads to landslides, floods, and weakens the land. Instead of just reacting after disasters, India needs to focus on preventing problems. Repeatedly acting surprised by such rain avoids learning from past events. Deforestation and rapid development continue in the Himalayas, even where slopes are already fragile. Early warning systems and community preparedness are still weak. Relief work usually starts only after damage, while real solutions like better forecasting, safer building, and sustainable infrastructure are neglected. India must start reducing vulnerabilities before disasters happen, not just handle the aftermath.

War Cry: On the Opposition’s ‘Vote Adhikar Yatra’ in Bihar
Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Vote Adhikar Yatra’ in Bihar is bringing Opposition parties together, covering 1,300 km and 20 districts in 16 days, with the final event in Patna on September 1. Leaders from many Opposition parties have joined the campaign, accusing the ruling BJP of controlling the Election Commission (ECI) and cheating in elections. The main charge is that new changes to voter lists in Bihar—where many names were removed—are unfairly hurting poor and minority voters who usually support non-BJP parties. The Election Commission says it followed rules, but critics say it has not acted fairly or openly. This focus on faulty elections, instead of issues like jobs or development, signals a worrying lack of trust in democratic institutions. Many believe the government is using its power against opponents, making the Opposition feel forced to question the entire election system.

Nearly Half of Urban Students Take Tuition: A Sign of a Broken Education System
Almost half of urban students in Classes XI and XII in India now attend private tuition classes, according to recent government data. This trend shows that students and parents do not have enough trust in regular school education. Private coaching, once meant for struggling students, has now become essential for academic competition and entrance exams, putting financial and emotional pressure on families. Urban students spend much more on coaching than rural students, and those who can’t afford it are left behind, making the gap between rich and poor wider. The focus on scores and constant stress damages students’ well-being and sometimes leads to tragic outcomes. Strengthening school education, providing more higher education opportunities, and making success less dependent on coaching are needed to fix the system, not just new rules for coaching centres.

Bees Follow a Balanced Diet—What’s Your Excuse?
A recent study shows that wild bumblebees carefully choose different flowers to get a balanced diet of protein, fat, and carbohydrates, not just any pollen they find. Some types of pollen have more protein, while others have more carbs or fat, and bees use teamwork to make sure their whole colony eats well. Larger bees eat protein-rich pollen, while smaller ones collect more carbs and fats. Other animals like elephants also pick their food to meet their body’s needs. For humans, with all the confusing health tips and diets around, the lesson is simple: stick to a balanced diet, along with rest and exercise—just like the bees do.
