Weaponising health care: On the Trump tariffs on imported medicines
On October 1, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump will impose 100% tariffs on imports of branded and patented pharmaceutical drugs unless companies are already constructing manufacturing plants in the U.S. This move aims to boost domestic production but will likely cause a sharp rise in medicine costs for Americans, especially for specialized cancer or rare disease treatments. The U.S. imports most of its branded medicines from Europe and Japan, which have a 15% tariff cap exemption, but countries like the U.K., Switzerland, and Singapore face full tariffs. India’s large generic drug industry, which supplies mostly lower-cost medicines accounting for 90% of U.S. prescriptions but only 13% of spending, is currently exempt. However, if tariffs broaden to biosimilars and more complex generics, Indian pharma exports could be hit hard. This policy, opposed by pharmaceutical bodies like PhRMA, may increase costs for patients and complicate global trade. For India and other nations reliant on U.S. pharma demand, diversifying markets and trade alliances is now urgent.

An avoidable tragedy: On the TVK rally, the stampede in Karur
The massive crowd crush at a political rally in Karur on September 27, 2025, during actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) campaign, tragically killed 40 people, including children, and injured many more. Since mid-September, Vijay’s high-energy weekend roadshows have drawn huge crowds despite police warnings and restrictions. The party underestimated attendance, expecting about 10,000 people but faced nearly three times that number on the day of the rally. Youths in the crowd climbed poles and rooftops, and the police failed to manage the swelling throng effectively. Following the tragedy, the government quickly arranged medical relief, and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin personally visited, calling for calm and entrusting an inquiry commission with the investigation. The tragedy exposed lapses by both TVK organisers and police, including allowing roadshows in densely populated areas and lacking crowd control measures. Going forward, Vijay must avoid using roadshows as shows of strength and ensure safer political gatherings, while police must insist on open, spacious venues for mass events.

After Karur stampede: Actor-politician Vijay cannot evade questions
The tragic stampede at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader and actor Vijay’s political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, on September 27, 2025, claimed 39 lives and injured many more. The event revealed familiar issues like poor planning, lack of crowd control, faulty communication, and failure to respond to emergencies. The rally’s authorised capacity was 10,000, but the actual crowd swelled to around 30,000, overwhelming organisers and police. Many fans climbed trees and poles to see Vijay, and there was no effective corrective action when panic and suffocation set in. Vijay spoke from a van, making it hard for most to hear him, and seemed unaware of the growing crisis. Despite expressing sorrow on social media, he left Karur soon after the tragedy, joining his residence in Chennai hours later. The probe should scrutinise both TVK’s leadership and police’s crowd management, which failed to prevent the disaster. Political parties must prioritise the safety of attendees in future gatherings, ensuring proper crowd control, open venues, and quick emergency responses, treating supporters with respect rather than as mere political assets.

Trump meets Asim Munir and Shehbaz Sharif: How should India react?
Since Donald Trump returned as U.S. President, relations between Washington and Islamabad have warmed notably, marked by key meetings including one in September 2025 where Trump hosted Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir. This new phase contrasts with the previous administration’s skeptical approach and reflects a transactional US-Pakistan partnership focused largely on security, regional issues like Afghanistan and Iran, and economic interests such as mineral exports. Pakistan praised Trump for his role in facilitating a ceasefire with India, a claim India denies. Despite the close talks, the political and military influence in Pakistan remains strong, especially under Munir’s leadership, signalling potential for adventurism. India, with a much larger economy and global stature, need not fear; instead, it should focus on solidifying ties with key global partners, accelerating internal reforms, and deepening its strategic relationship with the US to maintain advantage in the region
