Temporary Relief: On Trade Performance, Deeper Distress Ahead
India’s merchandise exports surged 19.4% to $38.1 billion in November 2025 despite 50% U.S. tariffs, marking the highest November figure in a decade with U.S.-bound exports up 22.6% to $6.98 billion, aided by rupee depreciation and exporters absorbing tariff hits temporarily. Imports fell 1.9% to $62.7 billion, shrinking the trade deficit, but signal weakening domestic demand amid GST rate cuts and unready local capabilities, while micro, small, and medium enterprises in labor-intensive sectors face order drops for January due to unsustainable tariff absorption and supply chain delays. The government must expedite Export Promotion Mission schemes like credit guarantees over loan moratoriums, adapting COVID-era relief, while preparing for prolonged U.S. policy uncertainty under President Donald Trump.

A Gamble: On the IPL Mini Auction in Abu Dhabi
The IPL mini auction in Abu Dhabi saw teams select 77 players from 369 registrants, with Australian all-rounder Cameron Green fetching a record ₹25.20 crore from Kolkata Knight Riders, surpassing Mitchell Starc’s previous high, due to his pace bowling and big-hitting skills despite a recent Test duck. Uncapped Indians like Chennai Super Kings’ ₹14.20 crore buys—20-year-old Uttar Pradesh spinner Prashant Veer and 19-year-old Rajasthan wicketkeeper Kartik Sharma—along with Delhi Capitals’ ₹8.40 crore Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi, highlighted youth focus amid CSK’s pivot around MS Dhoni and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Stars like Devon Conway and Jonny Bairstow went unsold, underscoring T20 utility, form, fitness, and marketability over sentiment, while comebacks like Sarfaraz Khan’s ₹75 lakh deal to CSK offered redemption, as the BCCI runs auctions precisely but could improve international scheduling around winter-affected T20Is.

RBI Shores Up Rupee. It May Be Good to Let It Be
The Reserve Bank of India intervened by selling dollars on Wednesday, strengthening the rupee against the US dollar by over 1% during the day to close at 90.09 from 91.05, marking its best gain in seven months after a sharp 6% depreciation over the past year and 3% since mid-November. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra reiterated the policy of letting markets determine the rupee’s value without targeting specific levels, focusing instead on curbing excessive volatility amid low domestic inflation and stable crude oil prices. While interventions moderate fluctuations and prevent panic, a controlled depreciation could benefit exports without fueling inflation, as the rupee’s true worth reflects India’s trade balance and capital inflows in a globally open economy.

Little Foot Tells a Big Evolution Story
A new study on “Little Foot,” one of the most complete early human fossils found in South Africa’s Sterkfontein caves between 1994-1998 and revealed publicly in 2017, suggests it represents a new species of human ancestor, distinct from Australopithecus prometheus or africanus, potentially reshaping views on human evolution as published in the American Journal of Biological Anthropology. Evolution, once seen as linear, now appears as a diffuse, branching process, echoed by a recent Chinese skull initially dated to a million years as Homo erectus but genetically linked to Homo longi with brain development akin to Homo sapiens and Neanderthals. This complex history highlights humanity’s adaptability amid modern threats like climate change, wars, and AI, offering inspiration that humans can rise to challenges as prehistory demonstrates.
