Winter Session of Parliament Offers Better Path Forward
India’s Parliament winter session, with 15 sittings, handled key legislation like repealing outdated laws, allowing full foreign investment in insurance, easing private nuclear power investments, and reforming the rural jobs scheme started in 2005, while marking the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram through long debates. Hindi titles for bills such as Sabka Bima Sabki Raksha and VB-G RAM G sparked concerns over constitutional English drafting rules from non-Hindi region members. Extended discussions on electoral reforms and Vande Mataram missed chances for consensus resolutions, while opposition pleas for air pollution talks were denied amid rushed bills and limited committee roles, though Question Hour improved. Less heated than before, the session saw tea meetings between leaders fostering positive exchanges worth expanding for healthier democracy.

Indian Diplomacy Beyond Optics in Global Order
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently visited Jordan, Ethiopia, and Oman to strengthen bilateral relations in a world of transactional ties, focusing on Global South leadership with key partners in their regions. In Oman, leaders signed a Cooperation Economic Partnership Agreement boosting trade to $10 billion and paving the way for Gulf free trade talks; in Jordan, agreements launched on renewable energy and water management amid West Asia tensions affecting corridors; and in Ethiopia, a strategic partnership advanced trade, technology sharing, and planning for an Africa-India summit, leveraging Ethiopia’s African Union role and BRICS membership ahead of India’s 2026 chair. Talks in Jordan addressed Gaza peace without mentioning the imperilled India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, while Modi reaffirmed India’s Palestinian support—balancing Jaishankar’s Israel visit—to reassure Arab and Global South leaders. Joint statements urged Gaza resolution and a sovereign Palestinian state, but India must convey this consistently to Israeli leaders like Netanyahu for visits to foster real shared global vision beyond surface friendliness.

India Tops Global Doping List Again
India has once again ranked first on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s list of doping violations for the third year in a row, with 260 positive cases in 2024, far ahead of nations like China, Germany, and France that test more strictly. This problem stems from unethical coaches seeking fast wins, athletes using banned substances for quick gains, and gaps in education about doping risks. Sports in India often serve as a way out of poverty, with medals leading to secure jobs, which fuels a win-at-any-cost attitude and makes athletes easy targets for drug suppliers. Reports show runners escaping tests at events like the Khelo India University Games, indicating doping has spread to young and local levels, especially in athletics, weightlifting, and wrestling—India’s key sports. Although the National Anti-Doping Agency claims more tests explain the high numbers, India’s 3.6% positivity rate dwarfs China’s 0.2%, raising doubts ahead of the 2036 Olympics bid. The International Olympic Committee has warned India to fix this issue. While testing and education efforts have cut the 2025 positivity rate to 1.5%, ongoing strong actions are essential for real change and to protect athletes’ health and India’s sports reputation.

New Job Guarantee Bill Needs More Debate
The Indian Parliament recently passed the VB-G RAM G Bill by voice vote without Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi present, as both were abroad. This new law replaces the 20-year-old MGNREGA, which provides wage jobs to about 6 crore rural families for around 50 days yearly, but the government skipped sending it to a standing committee for expert review unlike two other bills. The rush is puzzling since MGNREGA has bipartisan support and proved vital during Covid, creating over 389 crore person-days of work in 2020-21 under the current regime through improvements like Aadhaar-linked payments and asset geo-tagging. The new Bill shifts from demand-driven jobs—where households could claim up to 100 days with full central wage funding—to a supply-based system where the Centre sets state fund limits, covers only 60% costs, and risks favouring politically aligned states, burdening poorer ones further. These major changes needed wider public input and careful parliamentary checks to avoid past errors like the farm laws.
