A Good Template on India’s FTA with New Zealand
India’s free trade agreement with New Zealand serves as a strong model for future pacts, granting duty-free access for all Indian exports while securing commitments in IT services, education, financial services, and temporary work visas, as New Zealand offers tariff reductions on 70% of trade lines covering 95% of bilateral trade—excluding sensitive dairy products due to domestic pressures. The deal also tackles non-tariff barriers through better regulatory cooperation, transparency in customs, and streamlined sanitary and phyto-sanitary measures, alongside New Zealand’s pledge of $20 billion in investments over 15 years to deepen economic ties. Following recent agreements with the UK, Oman, EFTA, UAE, and Australia, this progress signals India’s integration into global markets, though benefits remain modest given smaller economies, urging priority on larger deals with the US and EU for maximum gains.

End the Exploitation: Supreme Court on Child Trafficking
The Supreme Court of India recently issued a strong warning about child trafficking, calling it a disturbing reality where organised groups continue to sexually exploit minors despite laws, as seen in a Bengaluru case where the court upheld convictions under the Immoral Traffic Prevention Act and stressed protecting children’s dignity and rights. Justices highlighted the complex networks involved in recruiting, moving, and harming victims, issuing guidelines for sensitive handling of child testimonies that may have small inconsistencies, treating them as injured witnesses rather than accomplices. Government and civil society must act urgently with better anti-trafficking units, higher convictions beyond the low 4.8% rate from 2018-2022, proper rehabilitation beyond compensation, prevention through education up to age 14, and measures against digital threats to stop all forms of child exploitation like forced labour.

Trade Deal with New Zealand is Much Needed
India has recently signed free trade agreements with several countries including the UK, Oman, and now New Zealand, following earlier pacts with the UAE, Australia, and the India-EFTA group, showing a strong push towards global market links. The new India-New Zealand deal gives duty-free entry for all Indian goods while gaining promises in IT, education, finance, and easier work visas; New Zealand gets tax cuts on most trade lines but no dairy access due to local concerns, plus better rules on non-tax barriers like customs and plant safety. It also boosts investments with New Zealand planning $20 billion in India over 15 years, though benefits may be small given trade sizes, so India should prioritise big deals with the US and EU next.
Editorial 4
Trumptastic Warships Continue a Fine Tradition
US President Donald Trump has named a new class of powerful battleships after himself as part of the Golden Fleet naval expansion project, following a long naval tradition of bold ship names from historic vessels like HMS Temeraire—which captured French ships at Trafalgar despite its reckless meaning—or HMS Victory and USS Constitution, ranging from flowers and insects to heroes and leaders. Unlike past cases such as USS George H W Bush named after a former president, the first Trump-class ship will be USS Defiant, reviving big-gun battleships as guided-missile giants over 35,000 tons long, billed as the deadliest ever built after aircraft carriers ended their era in World War II. While the focus on such massive costly surface ships raises questions today, the dramatic naming upholds naval bombast heritage.
