Green Washing: Supreme Court and Aravalli Mining Debate
The Supreme Court recently banned new mining leases in the Aravalli hills until a central sustainable mining plan is ready, amid concerns over illegal quarrying, groundwater loss, forest destruction, and worsening air pollution in Delhi and Haryana, while allowing limited government mining of critical minerals to meet development needs. States struggle with enforcement due to revenue interests, and the Court accepted a definition limiting Aravallis to hills over 100 metres, excluding 92% per Forest Survey estimates, without clear reasoning despite expert warnings. This fuels public distrust in government handling of ecological issues, as lack of transparency undermines claims that the definition applies only to mining, not other activities like tree felling or farming, making afforestation efforts and opposition blame ineffective without open information.

Magnetic Moment: India and Rare Earth Elements
Rare earth elements play a key role at the crossroads of climate goals, industry plans, and global politics, acting as essential parts for clean energy machines like EV motors and wind turbines despite not being the largest minerals by amount. India launched a ₹7,280-crore scheme to produce 6,000 tonnes of sintered permanent magnets yearly, aiming to cut import risks and boost local making of electric vehicles, wind parts, and electronics, but faces hurdles in mining beach sands with thorium, strict governance, waste handling, community ties, and scaling refining plus magnet output. Countries like India must build strong supply chains that avoid past environmental harms, ensure clear rules, steady funding, firm enforcement, long-term buyer deals, and process improvements to spread risks in the green shift without weakening eco-standards.

Aravallis Need the Supreme Court’s Shield
The Aravalli mountain range faces serious threats from illegal mining and environmental damage, with the Supreme Court repeatedly ruling against violations over the past 30 years and recently approving a new definition that includes only hills over 100 metres high, sparking protests in Rajasthan over fears of losing this ancient range. Experts like the Forest Survey of India warned that this narrow criteria would exclude over 91% of known hills, potentially worsening desert spread from the Thar towards Delhi-NCR plains and air pollution, contradicting past court efforts to protect the ecosystem. Despite strong precedents like the polluter pays principle from the 1996 M C Mehta case and rights against nature’s destruction, the court should heed its own advisors and fully shield the Aravallis from further harm.

Cheese Has Been Unfairly Maligned for Health
A recent study in Neurology found that high-fat cheeses like cheddar, gouda, brie, Stilton, and gorgonzola may lower dementia risk based on habits of 28,000 Swedish adults, though critics note it is not a sole protector and saturated fats remain debated, stressing balanced diet and exercise instead. Cheese faces unfair blame as research shifts fault to sugar for diseases like obesity, hypertension, and diabetes, while in India, cultural views against curdling milk limited its popularity despite milk abundance. Plato classified goods into those inherently pleasurable like cheese’s sharp, bitter, or pungent tastes—enjoyed purely in the moment beyond health claims or medicine.
