Zero stars: On the Sanchar Saathi app
Cybercrimes like fake digital arrests and cross-border scams are becoming more advanced, making them hard to stop as fraudsters use messaging apps even after removing SIM cards and fake IMEI numbers to hide. The government issued orders on November 28 and December 1 for SIM binding to disable accounts without SIMs and requiring phone makers to pre-install the Sanchar Saathi app by March 2026 to check device authenticity. While SIM binding may annoy messaging users, forcing the app with high access to camera, calls and SMS raises fears of surveillance misuse like Pegasus cases, despite claims users can delete it. The Supreme Court Puttaswamy judgment requires privacy intrusions to be legal, necessary and proportionate, but simpler options like web portals, SMS and USSD codes exist, so this order fails that test as even Apple resists compliance.

Speedbreakers ahead: On India’s economic data
Recent economic figures suggest India’s third quarter from October to December 2025 may see slower growth after a solid 8.2% GDP rise in the second quarter. Factory output per the Index of Industrial Production grew only 0.4% in October, the lowest in 14 months, with manufacturing at 1.8% hit by U.S. tariffs that cut exports by nearly 12%. Consumer goods dropped sharply—their worst in two years—capital goods rose just 2.4%, weather affected power and mining sectors, and GST revenue showed weak demand after rate changes, hinting at no strong rebound soon.

Cat dads don’t pay as much attention as cat moms. A new study proves it
A recent study in Turkey with 31 cat owners showed cats meow four times more to male caregivers than females to gain attention, as women talk more to cats and notice body language better, while cats have adapted over 1000 years to fit human habits despite their aloof image. Cats respond to names, prefer people over toys, and use meows—a kitten call for mothers—mostly with humans who often ignore them. Dogs lead in popularity, but cat behaviour research reveals strong bonds with owners.

Government forcing down Sanchar Saathi app erodes privacy, hurts business
The government’s order requires mobile phone makers to pre-install the Sanchar Saathi app on all devices made or imported for India to boost cyber security and fight spam, but it sparks fears of surveillance since users cannot easily delete it despite Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia’s claim it is optional. Launched in January, the app helps report fraud calls, block stolen phones and verify bank contacts, with over 50 lakh downloads and blocking 37 lakh lost devices by August, proving its value. Yet forcing it ignores consent-based successes like DigiLocker, leaves digital traces even if deleted, harms phone manufacturing growth led by Apple under PLI schemes, and better options exist like awareness campaigns before courts get involved.
