Sting in the tail: on Cyclone Ditwah, its impact
Cyclone Ditwah caused severe flooding in Sri Lanka in November, affecting 14 lakh people and killing at least 474. The cyclone then moved into India, bringing heavy rains to north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh, with Chennai experiencing flooding and waterlogging after 18 cm of rain in 24 hours. Chennai’s stormwater drainage system, rebuilt after past floods and extended recently, cannot fully handle such extreme rainfall over long hours. Poor maintenance, encroachments, and incomplete drainage work worsened flooding. Despite a 600-page report on flood management by the Thiruppugazh Committee and state government plans for upgrades and integrated projects, a clear public implementation plan is lacking, along with accessible flood maps and zoning regulations. The situation reveals ongoing infrastructure and transparency gaps, urging the government to publish reports, enhance coordination, and deploy temporary measures to better prepare the city for future storms.

Taking the leap: on leprosy in India and discrimination
Discrimination against people with leprosy in India continues through outdated laws that restrict their access to public transport, jobs, public spaces, and even the right to run for office or start businesses. Despite medical advances showing leprosy is non-infectious and curable, about 57% of global cases are still in India, worsened by genetic factors and poor living conditions. The Supreme Court has intervened, directing states to report efforts to remove such discriminatory provisions, backed by evidence from the NHRC. The NHRC recommends early treatment, rehabilitation, replacing derogatory legal terms, and using iris scans for Aadhaar enrolment to avoid problems caused by fingertip nerve damage. Urgent reform is needed to end these discriminatory laws that unfairly trap affected people in stigma and denial of rights.

Don’t rush in to prop up the rupee
The Indian rupee fell below 90 against the US dollar, declining over 6% yearly against the dollar and more against euro and pound, but heavy market intervention to artificially support it now is unwise as exchange rates cushion economic shocks and a weaker rupee boosts exports amid global challenges while RBI should focus on low inflation (0.25% CPI in October) not currency defence. Growing trade deficit from 12% export drop (US down 8.6% due to Trump tariffs), surging gold imports ($14.7 bn vs $4.9 bn), $41.7 bn deficit, $17 bn FPI outflows, modest FDI, $6.4 bn forex reserve loss, and India-US trade uncertainty pressure the rupee, so RBI needs calibrated depreciation to curb volatility while government boosts productivity, competitiveness and seals trade deals.

From Pune, the discovery of Alaknanda, Milky Way’s long-lost sibling
Scientists have found a galaxy called Alaknanda near Pune that closely resembles the Milky Way, with clear spiral arms and a bright center. This challenges previous beliefs because such stable galaxies were thought to form much later after the Big Bang. The James Webb Space Telescope has shown that the universe formed faster, with mature galaxies existing only 1.5 billion years after the Big Bang. This discovery is causing scientists to rethink the evolution of the universe and helps us better understand ourselves.
