India’s foreign exchange reserves rose to a record high of $709.41 billion in the week ended January 23 following an $8 billion increase driven by gold reserve gains and revaluation effects despite rupee depreciation pressures.
The government contained its fiscal deficit for the first nine months of FY26 at 54.5 per cent of the Budget Estimates compared to 56.7 per cent in the previous financial year through higher non-tax revenues and controlled spending despite a contraction in December capital expenditure.
The World Bank Group announced a new five-year partnership with the Government of India providing $8-10 billion in annual financing starting from 2026 to support job creation across urban and rural areas through infrastructure, energy, agribusiness, healthcare, tourism, and manufacturing sectors.
Bank loans against gold jewellery grew 128 per cent year-on-year and 86 per cent in the financial year to Rs 3.83 lakh crore, recording the fastest growth among all major bank credit segments as overall bank credit expanded 14.5 per cent year-on-year to Rs 203.23 lakh crore.
Global reinsurers including Lloyd’s of London, Samsung Re, Kenya Re and Mapfre Re plan to establish operations in GIFT City to access India’s $129.78 billion insurance market while about 14 international reinsurers already manage $700-800 million in annualised premiums from the financial hub.
