Credible and Creditable: On Union Budget 2026-27
The Union Budget 2026-27, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, deserves praise for sticking to fiscal discipline while boosting growth-oriented spending amid global economic challenges. It keeps the fiscal deficit steady at 4.4% of GDP for 2025-26 and targets 4.3% for the next year, with the Centre’s debt ratio improving from 56.1% to 55.6% of GDP. Capital expenditure rises sharply to Rs 12.21 lakh crore to support infrastructure like roads, railways, and urban projects, helping create jobs and stimulate private investment. Tax receipts grew despite shortfalls, showing prudent management of revenue without populist giveaways. While it advances self-reliance in manufacturing and technology, the budget credibly balances caution with ambition for India’s long-term progress.

Budget Moves Forward with Future as Focus but Ducks Key Reforms
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented her ninth full Union Budget, showing strong commitment to controlling government spending despite lower tax collections. The budget keeps the fiscal deficit at 4.4% of GDP for 2025-26 and plans to lower it to 4.3% next year, while reducing the Centre’s debt from 56.1% to 55.6% of GDP. Capital spending has more than doubled since 2020-21 and will rise further to Rs 12.21 lakh crore in 2026-27 to build infrastructure like roads and railways. However, it skips big changes in areas like labour laws, land acquisition, farm reforms, and trimming food or fertiliser subsidies, which hit Rs 4.15 lakh crore last year and may overshoot again. The plan supports self-reliance and growth in manufacturing but lacks bold steps to fix deep economic issues for faster progress.
