A good fix: On the IRCTC and ticket booking
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd. (IRCTC) operates one of India’s most used e-commerce platforms for train ticket booking, handling massive volumes like 31,814 tickets in 60 seconds. However, the system, especially during Tatkal booking hours, suffers from crashes and slowdowns due to high demand and misuse by agents using bots. In response, IRCTC has implemented key reforms: a digital overhaul with anti-bot technology, deactivation of 2.5 crore suspicious user IDs, Aadhaar-based authentication, and temporary restrictions on agents during Tatkal hours. These measures aim to promote equity in ticket access. Despite these improvements, the underlying issue is the persistent mismatch between demand and train capacity. The Indian Railways must expand infrastructure, ensure safety, and enhance facilities to truly meet passenger needs, making technological fixes more effective and sustainable in the long term.
Out of the abyss: On South Korea, its new President
In December 2024, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law to override the opposition-led National Assembly and consolidate power with military backing. His attempt, which included plans to arrest key opposition leaders like Lee Jae-myung, backfired and led to his swift downfall and impeachment. In the June 3, 2025 election, Lee Jae-myung, a progressive, won the presidency with 49.4% votes, defeating the conservative candidate Kim Moon-soo. The peaceful transition marked a strong affirmation of South Korea’s democratic foundations.Lee assumes office with a strong mandate and parliamentary majority, but faces the challenge of restoring order without indulging in political retribution. Economically, he must act quickly to revive growth amid lowered projections and trade tensions. In foreign policy, he must balance ties with the U.S.—deemed essential—while repairing relations with China and reducing tensions with North Korea. As a symbolic first step, he halted K-pop propaganda broadcasts at the border. Ultimately, Lee’s leadership will be tested by his ability to ensure accountability, foster peace on the Korean Peninsula, and strengthen South Korea’s global partnerships.
