New horizons: On COP30 in Brazil

The 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is being held in Belém, Brazil, from November 10 to 21, 2025. Marking a decade since the historic Paris Agreement, COP30 aims to assess progress and ramp up global efforts to limit warming to below 2°C, ideally below 1.5°C. Brazil’s presidency focuses on implementation and collective action, emphasizing financial mechanisms for adaptation, forest preservation, and the strengthening of carbon credit markets. In Free Fall: On Violence-Hit Sudan

Sudan continues to experience severe violence, especially from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group with origins in the Janjaweed militia, notorious for brutal ethnic cleansing and genocide accusations. After capturing El-Fasher in Darfur following a prolonged siege, RSF militants committed widespread atrocities including mass killings and assaults on civilians, devastating the famine-stricken region. Reports from UN experts and organizations like Human Rights Watch characterize these actions as genocidal. The conflict, which erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and RSF, has displaced over 12 million people and killed tens of thousands. The military government controls much of Sudan with backing from Egypt, while the RSF dominates Darfur with UAE support. Although recent fighting pushed the RSF out of Khartoum, El-Fasher remains under its control. The ongoing violence risks further death, destruction, and potential state collapse. Is Your Password PASSWORD? It Could Be a Problem

Choosing and managing strong passwords remains a significant challenge for many users. While complex passwords like “Zpg76lMq13qKfy@!” offer strong security, remembering various versions across multiple sites can be frustrating, often leading to password resets. Some organisations, including the Louvre museum, have been criticised for using weak passwords like “LOUVRE” for critical systems, revealing major security gaps. The latest guidelines from cybersecurity experts such as NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) for 2025 prioritise password length (12-16 characters) over complexity, encouraging the use of passphrases that are both secure and memorable. Mandatory password changes are now recommended only when there is evidence of compromise. The use of password managers is highly endorsed to create and safely store unique passwords, reducing the risks of reuse or weak choices. Eliminating password hints and expanding character sets, including Unicode, further strengthen password security. On Stray Dogs Issue, SC Undermines Its Own Balanced Approach

Nearly three months after a balanced Supreme Court order allowing stray dogs to be removed, sterilised, vaccinated, and then returned to their original locations except in cases of aggression or rabies, the Court reversed course. Citing frequent dog bite incidents, it ordered immediate removal of stray dogs from public spaces like schools, hospitals, and transport hubs, directing they be kept in shelters after sterilisation and vaccination. This abrupt shift undermines the earlier calibrated stance and risks intensifying tensions on a divisive issue. While the threat of stray dogs, especially to vulnerable groups, is real, the government recorded 37 lakh dog bite cases in 2024, mass removal within eight weeks as ordered seems impractical due to administrative apathy and lack of shelter infrastructure. The stray dog problem is complex, fuelled by feeding from animal lovers, poor waste management, and uncontrolled breeding with pet dogs. Effective solutions require recognizing these causes and balancing public health concerns with humane, scientific approaches in open debate.
